IMBA - Institute of Molecular Biotechnology is one of the leading biomedical research institutes in Europe focusing on cutting-edge functional genomics and stem cell technologies. IMBA is located at the Vienna BioCenter, the vibrant cluster of universities, research institutes and biotech companies in Austria. IMBA is a basic research institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the leading national sponsor of non-university academic research.

We are looking for a full-time research technician to provide primary support for the incoming laboratory of Dr. Alejandro Burga, starting December 2018/January 2019.

What makes individuals, populations and ultimately species different from each other? The primary goal of the Burga lab is to understand at the molecular level the forces driving the evolution of complex traits with a particular emphasis on the contribution of epistatic interactions (genetic modifiers) and genomic conflict (selfish elements). To do so, we apply a multidisciplinary approach that combines our expertise in quantitative genetics, genomics and developmental biology in systems ranging from nematodes to vertebrates.

The successful applicant should be well-organized, highly proactive and willing to learn new techniques, able to work independently as well as in a team. He or she should have experience in molecular biology techniques (such as DNA/RNA preps, PCR and molecular cloning).  Experience in either genetics, cell culture, gene editing (CRISPR/Cas9) or next generation sequencing technologies will be highly regarded. Good English-language communication skills are essential, and German-language is a plus.

The main responsibilities will be ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the laboratory (including placing orders, managing equipment, supplies and reagents), molecular biology (sequencing/gene editing), work with C. elegans (such as managing a frozen strain collection, microinjection, microscopy and genetics) and cell line work.

We offer a young, dynamic, international work environment (employees come from 40 different countries), and a chance to make an important contribution to basic biomedical research. The position also offers opportunities for further training in multidisciplinary techniques spanning molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry and biophysics. The annual gross salary will be € 31.024 or higher, - full-time (40 hrs/week), depending on qualification and experience.

Applications, including a letter of motivation describing the reason of your interest in this position and past research experiences, a CV and the names and contact details of two referees should only be made online. Evaluation of applications/interviews will begin in September and continue until the position is filled. We look forward to your application and meeting you in person.
