WHAT MOTIVATES US?

Phages have a natural ability to infect and lyse bacteria that is independent of antibiotics resistances. They also have highly desirable pharmaceutical properties: they are self-replicating and self-limiting, they have proven effectiveness against biofilms and have no known serious side effects. For many bacterial infections, natural, lytic phages are a promising alternative to antibiotics, but to this date no phage-based pharmaceuticals are on the market in either the US or the EU.

WHO AND WHAT IS PHAGOMED?

PhagoMed Biopharma GmbH is a pre-clinical Biotech company dedicated to developing phage-based pharmaceuticals for the developed markets. PhagoMed builds on the clinical experience of its two co-founders (Prof. Burkhard Wippermann & PD Dr. Andrej Trampuz), who have treated patients in Germany with phage therapy for the past twenty years (Last resort treatments as defined by Art. 37 of the Helsinki declaration). The company was incorporated in 2017 and PhagoMed has secured financing from private investors and the Austrian government to scale-up its research efforts into phage therapy for two indications: Periprosthetic Joint Infections (PJI) and Urinary Tract Infections (UTI). For both indications, PhagoMed has partnered with Opinion Leaders in the field, who can help to define how a phage-based product can fit into today’s treatment guidelines and provide a strong benefit to patients.

PhagoMed’s vision is to accelerate the re-introduction of phage therapy into Western medicine across a range of indications and thereby to bring the benefits of this overlooked treatment alternative to patients as fast as possible.
