Research Technician (full time)

The IMBA Institute of Molecular Biotechnology of the Austrian Academy of Science is an internationally recognized research institute that focuses on molecular medicine, stem cell research and RNA biology and is home to about 230 scientists from over 42 countries. It is located at the Vienna Biocenter, very close to the city centre of Vienna. Science carried out at IMBA is at the highest level and IMBA has a great state-of-the-art infrastructure and top research programs for different scientific career-levels.

We are looking for a research technician to provide primary support for the Urbán lab. The post responsibilities include the handling of transgenic mice colonies, the setting up of new techniques and occasional collaborations with other members of the lab.

The post-holder will work in the Urbán lab and will report directly to our lab manager, Tatjana Kepcija, and to Noelia Urbán. Their time will be divided between lab duties (to be performed in the lab) and colony management (to be performed in the animal house and in the lab). Lab duties include performing routine techniques such as PCR, tissue sectioning and immunostaining. Colony management duties include the breeding, weaning, ear-clipping and genotyping of transgenic mice, as well as assistance with dissections and perfusions, when necessary.

Key Responsibilities

On a daily basis:

  • To maintain transgenic mice colonies to allow experimental work (in coordination with Tatjana Kepcija). This includes but is not limited to:
    • Setting up breeding pairs of appropriate genotypes to generate mice for colony maintenance and experimental work
    • Weaning and ear-clipping of litters
    • Genotyping (DNA extraction and PCR)

Occasionally/when requested:

  • To assist specific projects by performing:
    • Intraperitoneal administration of substances to adult mice
    • Perfusion of adult mice
    • Brain sectioning using vibratome/cryostat
    • Immunostaining of brain sections
  • To train and collaborate with the other members of the Urbán lab

Your qualifications:

Essential Skills:

  • Degree (or equivalent) or extensive relevant experience
  • Ability to work independently but able to take direction when necessary
  • High degree of self-motivation
  • Able to work as part of a team
  • High level of organisation and good record-keeping skills
  • Fluency in English

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in mouse handling
  • Experience in adult mouse perfusion
  • Experience in sectioning and staining of tissue
  • Proactive in problem solving
  • Good communication skills
  • Extensive understanding of relevant scientific literature
