PhD position

Applied fungal microbiology

Vienna / Austria for 30 hours a week

That’s the project

Citric acid is microbially produced in industry by Aspergillus niger. The molecular mechanisms of the citric acid production in Aspergillus niger are not fully elucidated and are seen as limiting factors. Transport processes play an essential role and understanding the regulation of those processes could help to improve the citric acid production. In this project, acib will work on genetic and metabolic engineering tools to enable a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind the process.

The project offers you:

  • CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing of filamentous fungi
  • Metabolic engineering
  • Investigation of fungal metabolism and physiology

That could be your future me

You are part of a highly interacting interdisciplinary project team, you are at the front of synthetic biology research with an industrially used microorganism and you work in collaboration with an international industrial partner. Additional you start to build up your scientific network in an international team of researchers.

Further benefits: numerous possibilities for further education and personal development, flexible working hours, helpful work environment full of team spirit and enthusiasm for your job

That’s important to us

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in biotechnology, microbiology, applied genetics, molecular biology, biochemical engineering, biochemistry, or similar study
  • Strong practical experience in molecular biology is desired. Practical experience with filamentous fungi is advantageous.  Scientific interest in synthetic biology and metabolic engineering is desired.
  • Experience in bioanalytical techniques such as HPLC is advantageous
  • Excellent skills in spoken and written English, an organized approach with strong attention to detail and good communication skills with ability to work well in teams.

You should enjoy the work in an international interdisciplinary environment.

That’s what you should know

It is intended to offer a minimum yearly gross payment of EUR 30,800.
