Polymers are an integral part of our daily life and industry, but feedstock origin and the negative environmental impact of plastic polymers raise major concerns and have boosted the search for sustainable solutions. Microorganisms show enormous potential for the production of bio-based polymers from renewable sources or waste streams. However, only little is known about the underlying principle triggering microbial polymer production, such as the involved proteins and cultivation conditions. In this project we will identify key proteins required to produce specific polymers, we will use this information to genetically engineer microorganisms, and will then characterize the engineered polymer-producing strains.
